Abstract

We assessed the phytoconstituents of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Spermacocehispida L leaves. Ethanolic extract of Spermacocehispida L. subjected to GC-MS analysis elucidated the occurrence of 55 bio-active chemical compounds. Effective inhibitory activity of - amylase, and -glucosidase was shown by both the extracts. Glucose absorption capacity on the 3T3 L1 cell line and glucose diffusion assay showed the capacity of the chemicals from plant extracts to bind to glucose and retard its diffusion through the dialysis membrane. MTT assay results suggested no cytotoxic effect by both the plant extracts on the adipocyte cells. Results suggested the antidiabetic potential of Spermacocehispida L chemical extracts and in-vivo studies are needed for future clinical implications.
