Abstract

Uncontrolled inflammation can cause severe destruction in the host though it is a protective host defence mechanism. The current study evaluated the anti-inflammatory property of different extracts of roots and rhizomes of Smilax ovalifolia Roxb. Using three different inflammation models in Wistar albino rats. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of S. ovalifolia exerted significant protection in carrageenan and formalin-induced paw oedema models and cotton pellet-induced granuloma model. A dose-dependent protection was observed in both aqueous as well as ethanol extracts (66.53%protection) of S. ovalifolia in the carrageenanenan-induced paw oedema model. The SOEE could exert the highest protection (83.84%, p<0.001) against formalin-induced paw oedema after 12hrs of formalin challenges. The ethanol (33.66%) and aqueous extracts (26.9%) of S. ovalifolia significantly reduced the wet weight of cotton pellets. The Diclofenac reduced the wet weight of cotton pellets to 57.74% followed by Indomethacin (40.76%).
